Search syntax
SearXNG comes with a search syntax by which you can modify the categories, engines, languages, and more. See the preferences for the list of engines, categories, and languages.
! Select engine and category
To set category and/or engine names, use a ! prefix. To give a few examples:
-
Search Wikipedia for paris:
-
Search in category map for paris:
-
Image search
Abbreviations of the engines and languages are also accepted. Engine/category modifiers are chainable and inclusive. For example, !map !ddg !wp paris searches in the map category and searches DuckDuckGo and Wikipedia for paris.
: Select language
To select a language filter use a : prefix. To give an example:
-
Search Wikipedia with a custom language:
!!<bang> External bangs
SearXNG supports the external bangs from DuckDuckGo. To directly jump to a
external search page use the !! prefix. To give an example:
-
Search Wikipedia with a custom language:
Please note that your search will be performed directly in the external search engine. SearXNG cannot protect your privacy with this.
!! automatic redirect
When including !! within your search query (separated by spaces), you will
automatically be redirected to the first result. This behavior is comparable to
the “Feeling Lucky” feature from DuckDuckGo. To give an example:
-
Search for a query and get redirected to the first result
Please keep in mind that the result you are being redirected to can’t be verified for trustworthiness and SearXNG cannot protect your personal privacy when using this feature. Use it at your own risk.
Special Queries
In the preferences page you find keywords for special queries. To give a few examples:
-
Generate a random UUID
-
Find the average
-
Show the user agent of your browser (needs to be activated)
-
Convert strings to different hash digests (needs to be activated)
Unwoke.space search features
Everything above works here. Unwoke.space adds the following.
Search tabs
- General - the normal web search, ranked by our guidelines, the community's votes and your own likes.
- Files (IPFS) - files on the web, in torrents and on IPFS (see below).
- TOR - .onion sites from the Ahmia index, 20 per page. They only open in the Tor Browser; a yellow note says so when you are not using Tor.
Files: DOS-style wildcards
On the Files (IPFS) tab, type a file name or a pattern. The pattern is matched against the file's name (or the page title plus the file type when the address has no file name).
| Type | Finds |
|---|---|
* | any number of characters: * on its own lists every file in our IPFS list |
? | exactly one character: report??.doc finds report01.doc, report2b.doc ... |
a* | files whose names begin with "a" (IPFS list only: too short for the web) |
*.pdf | files of one type (also searches the web for that file type) |
manual*.pdf | PDF files whose names begin with "manual" |
linux iso | no wildcard: files, torrents and IPFS files about the words |
A pattern needs at least one word of two letters or more (or a file type) to be sent to the web and torrent sites; shorter patterns only search our own IPFS list.
IPFS is ticked by default and lists up to 30 IPFS files per page: first our own list of IPFS files, then files on public IPFS gateways. Untick it to search only torrents and web files; your choice is remembered on this computer.
Tags
- Results carry tags such as News, Science or Board Games, for the page itself or for the whole site; your own private tags are shown first.
- Tag filters (in the side panel): + keeps only results with that tag, − hides results with it; untagged stands for results without any tag. Remove filters clears them.
- Browse by tag: set tag filters and search for
*(or leave the box empty) to list every stored entry with those tags. - Logged-in members can add tags to results: your tags are private, and a tag that enough members agree on becomes a tag for everyone.
Thumbs up and down
- Page 👍👎 rates that one page; Site 👍👎 rates the whole web site. Click the same thumb again to take your vote back.
- Your likes move results up, and your dislikes move them down, in your own searches. A page vote wins over a site vote when they disagree.
- Logged in: your votes also nudge the ranking for everyone. Not logged in: your votes are kept only for you, with an anonymous cookie on this computer, and do not change anyone else's results.
- TOR sites can only be rated while you are using Tor, since only then can you open them.
SafeSearch
Visitors who are not logged in always get strict SafeSearch, which also removes results we tagged Adult. Log in to choose your own setting in Preferences.
